Jose started his assault on music in Arizona as Metal Director of KAMP, the University of Arizona college radio station in Tucson. As a graduate student in Pharmacy over in Memphis, Mangin landed a killer gig in radio and won Album Network’s “Metal Director of the Year” in 1999 while working for active rocker WMFS. Deciding against pushing pills, Mangin started pushing albums for TVT Records in New York City and landed his dream job over at Sirius XM in 2000.
For over nine years, José has been in charge of programming several rock channels but mainly Sirius XM’s two loudest rock stations, Octane (Active Rock) and Liquid Metal. As one of the first voices ever heard on satellite radio, he can now be heard rockin’ the digital air waves weekdays from 4-9pm ET on Liquid Metal, with regular appearances on the Opie & Anthony show, Maxim Radio, Raw Dog Comedy, and the Howard Stern channels.
Since 2004, Mangin has won FMQB’s “Program Director of the Year” and “Most Influential Programmer of the Year,” and GQ Magazine featured José in their December 2005 issue as one of four satellite radio DJs that “we’d pay to hear.” Mangin was even name checked by Metallica’s James Hetfield in Rolling Stone magazine, and in the summer of 2009, he was featured throughout the pages of Inked magazine.
In addition to Sirius XM, he hosts LatiNation, a weekly nationally syndicated TV show on in over 100 major markets and on SiTV. Mangin also hosts a daily video blog, stars in various rock videos, hosts documentaries, is a spokesmodel for Affliction, Remetee & Metal Couture clothing, and is a proud father of two hell raising little metal chicks.
Recently MTV2 chose José to host a weeklong celebration for the 20th anniversary of MTV’s longest running show, the Headbangers Ball, interviewing the show’s past hosts and bands such as Metallica, Anthrax, Mudvayne, Testament and more. In the spring of 2009, Mangin hosted a weeklong special surrounding the country’s first ever heavy metal awards show, the Revolver Golden Gods Awards. Since then, he’s hosted over eight episodes of the Headbangers Ball and has been officially handed the torch to carry on as host for hard rock’s most respected music video TV show.
Raised since birth on rock music, José lives his dream 24/7 and is unbelievably proud to be bringing this music to the masses.
